This morning, I went to the gym with a friend. I don't have a gym membership and do almost 100% of my training at home, or close by. I went because my friend is rehabilitating an injury, using some machines. He wanted me to see what he was doing and see if I could offer any suggestions that might help.
So off we went. His gym is quite a place, with all kinds of amenities and enough machinery to build a ship.
We had to wait a bit for his trainer, who is a rehab specialist, so I wandered around a bit. I gravitated toward the "real men's" area, which is where all the heavy weights are. The women's area is where all the treadmills, elliptical trainers, bikes and so on are located. Women love cardio, even though running for hours will NOT help them lose any weight.
In the "manly" area, there were a good number of young men, testing their testoserone levels, loading up bars with lots of big plates. What I witnessed was an orthopaedic surgeon's dream, or way too many young men tempting fate. Some of what I saw made me want to scream at them to stop, but telling young muscleheads that they are risking serious injury doesn't go over well in these scenarios.
I understand that they want to be strong and some of them were training for football, on the high school and college level. But some of the so-called exercises they were involved in will blow up
on them, at some point. The shame is that this stuff comes out of gym culture, not professional trainers, who would have a fit if they saw this going on in their training facility. Unfortunately, a lot
of people think training well involves more and more weight. They refer to this as the law of progression, but what it is...baloney.
One of the strongest men I have ever known has never trained with more than 20 pounds and his own body weight. Believe me, he would match up with anybody you could drag in.
My friend and I met with his rehab trainer, who really knew his stuff. My friend couldn't be in better hands and the trainer even recommended my friend take my Joint Health Formula, to speed things along. He was in 100% agreement about the benefits my friend could get from this formula, based on the extract of green lipped mussels from New Zealand.
A word of caution about the gym. If you have a gym membership and like working out there, that's fine. It really doesn't matter where you exercise, as long as you DO exercise. But stay away from heavy weights and stop an exercise, when you can't do the form correctly. Your body sends out warning signals all the time and you need to pay attention.
Remember...it's a lot easier to pay attention, than to pay a guy like me to put you back together, after you have seriously injured
yourself. Stay safe and don't listen to the muscleheads, who give a lot of free advice that may one day cost you dearly.
